About the Program

The Academic Advising & Student Achievement Center's Peer Mentor Program serves first-year students by fostering excellence through social and academic integration. The Peer Mentor Program is designed to create positive academic and social connections for first-year students. The Peer Mentor team is made up of juniors and seniors who help, guide, and provide resources to their assigned mentees.

What Do Peer Mentors Provide?

As active student leaders, Peer Mentors share personal experiences to assist and help ease the transition from high school and other colleges to Western’s campus by providing support and building bridges between their mentees and other departments and resources across campus.

Want to get involved in clubs, intramural sports or student government and affairs? Ask your Peer Mentor! Mentors provide students with the help needed to find a place at Western. Peer Mentors provide a student’s perspective on the best places to eat, know-how regarding bus routes and other transportation needs, insight into the classroom experience, and send alerts on upcoming events on campus. Students have a ready resource for answers to questions ranging from how to get involved in student activities to how to add a class or declare a major.

Who Can Participate in the Program?

Participation in the program is by invitation only for students who were identified in the Admissions application process as being first-generation and/or Pell-eligible.

How Does It Work?

Students eligible to participate in the program will be sent an email inviting them to apply. Once an application is received, mentors and mentees are matched based on their compatibility.

After the match is made, mentors and mentees meet for an hour each week to connect, check on the mentee's progress at Western, and answer any questions the mentee might have.

What are the Mentees saying?

"Anytime I had a question, they had the answer. If they didn't know the answer, then they found the answer."

"We had a great connection and because of that, this quarter was my most successful so far."

"Thank you for being a positive person in my life. Your help is really so appreciated!"
