Major and Minor Advising

Contact the academic department staff or faculty advisor related to your declared or intended major.  

Other Common Advising Resources:

  • The Academic Advising & Student Achievement Center advisors are prepared to meet with you to discuss ways in which you can build a strong foundation for academic success including GPA calculations, connecting with campus resources and more. 
  • The Academic Advising & Student Achievement Center advisors are available to meet with you to review and discuss possible majors at Western. This can include reviewing steps to apply/declare, using the What-If tool in Degree Works, mapping out possible timelines, etc. You can also check out this helpful Choosing a Major site.  
  • The Career Services Center career counselors meet with students exploring majors who also want to learn about career options available to them in the process. Check out the Explore Careers site for more information. 
  • The Academic Advising & Student Achievement Center advisors are your primary advising resource related to GUR advising and fulfillment. Advisors will work with you to determine what GUR course options you have. Many introductory major/minor courses may also count as GURs and advisor can help you identify these.  
  • Students interested in learning more about graduate school options at WWU should contact the Graduate School.  
  • Students interested in graduate school can visit the Career Services Center's Explore Graduate School page to learn more.
  • Students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare should contact the Health Professions Advisor in the Career Services Center.  
  • Advisors for your major/minor are excellent resources as you look at options. They can also help you understand required or optional internship credits.  
  • Career Services Center career counselors meet with students exploring internships and can assist with creating resumes and preparing for internship interviews. Click here to learn more information about internships.
  • Students declared in a major, pre-major, phase 1-major or minor are assigned an advisor by their academic department (see Degree Works for assignment). Academic department advisors are experts in their program’s requirements and can assist you with preparing for, applying and continuing in a major. Programs of Study list the specific contact person you should connect with.  
  • Advisors in the Academic Advising & Student Achievement Center can discuss how to declare majors and minors, progress towards graduation based on major and minor requirements and talk through changes you want to make to your declared majors or minors. AASAC advisors will also refer you to who you should work with within the academic department of your major or minor of interest. 
  • The Math Department is available to answer questions about math placement, math transfer credit, etc.  
  • Academic Advising & Student Achievement Center advisors can help with questions about which math course works best for your academic interests, math sequencing and helping you know if you need to take the ALEKS Math Placement Assessment. Once you have confirmed your enrollment at WWU, you can sign up for your Advising & Registration session. Advising & Registration (A&R) sessions are required for incoming First-Year and Running Start students and strongly recommended for incoming Transfer students. Learn more about A&R as well as other important orientation steps on the New Student Services/Family Outreach website.  

  • If you are considering Western and are admitted but not confirmed to attend and want to learn more about academics, check out the resources below. Once you have confirmed your enrollment to WWU, you will attend a new student Advising & Registration session.
    • Identify your Admissions Counselor by location and they can help you learn more about Western in general as well as our academic offerings.  
    • Learn more about majors and minors by visiting the WWU Majors pages. You will also find contact information if you are interested in chatting with the department. If you are entering Western with transfer credits, begin planning your major early and connect with advisors in academic departments before you begin at WWU. 
  • If you are interested in studying abroad during your time at WWU, connect early with the Education Abroad office.  
  • Advisors in the Academic Advising & Student Achievement Center can help current Western students understand how classes taken at other colleges may transfer to meet graduation requirements. Advisors can also work with students in navigating the Reverse Transfer policy.
  • Degree Evaluation in the Registrar’s Office can answer questions from continuing Western students about how credit from other colleges transfers to Western. You can email the Degree Evaluation team at DegreeEval@wwu.edu.  
  • The Office of Admissions can answer questions from prospective and incoming students about how credit from other colleges transfers to Western. More information about transfer credit policies can be found on their website.

How do I schedule to meet with an advisor?

  • AASAC advisor availability is located on their website.  
  • Academic department advising availability is listed on each of their websites. You can locate websites by searching on the Department Directory.  
  • Faculty advisors are available during office hours or by appointment.  

How often should I meet with an advisor?

Plan on meeting with an advisor at least once per quarter to make sure you are on track in course planning to meet your academic and graduation goals. While you may hear directly from advisors during your time at WWU, it is up to you to reach out and schedule an appointment.  

Shared responsibility of advising

At Western, staff and faculty advisors are well prepared to assist you in your planning and available to meet with you. Although you may hear directly from advisors, it is Western’s expectation that you reach out to the advisor to meet with them. There are also many self-serve advising resources and tools available to you available on the AASAC Advising Tools and Resources page. Many academic departments also provide other resources related to major/minor planning on their websites.
