Math as a Prerequisite for Science and Engineering Majors

Science and engineering majors include math coursework as requirements in the major and as prerequisites to science or engineering courses. Below is a list of the WWU math prerequisite for the first course in a sequence by major.  It is highly recommended that students interested in science and engineering majors begin math and science coursework early in their academic career. It is recommended that students register for the highest level of math they qualify for based on their ALEKS Math Placement Assessment scores, transfer credits, placement information, or previous math coursework at Western.  Some science courses allow a suitable Math Placement Assessment score to serve as a prerequisite. • Biology: students are eligible for Biology (BIOL) 204 (5 credits, first in a sequence) following CHEM 161
• Chemistry: students are eligible for Chemistry (CHEM) 161 (5 credits, first in a sequence) following Math 114
• Computer Science: students are eligible for Computer Science 141 following Math 112. Computer Science 141 is first in a sequence and 5 credits.
• Electrical and Computer Engineering: students are eligible for Electrical and Computer Engineering (EECE) 108 and 109 (1 credit each, taken concurrently, first in a sequence) without a prerequisite
• Engineering and Design: students are eligible for Engineering (ENGR) 101 (3 credits, first in a sequence) without a prerequisite
• Geology: students are eligible for Geology (GEOL) 211 (5 credits, first in a sequence) while enrolled in or following Math 114
• Physics and Astronomy: students are eligible for Physics (PHYS) 161 (5 credits, first in a sequence) while enrolled in or following Math 124
