Anthropology

There are five distinct Anthropology majors with different math requirements.

The Anthropology BA and the Anthropology - Archaeology BA, do not have math as a part of their requirements or as pre-requisites for other classes. You will likely only need to take math to fulfill Western’s General University Requirements.

If you have done or will do any of the following, then you will likely not need to take the MPA:

  • Earn college credit in a Calculus course with a grade of C- or better
  • Score a 2, 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Calculus exam
  • Score a 2, 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Pre-Calculus exam
  • Earn college credit in a Pre-Calculus 2 course with a grade of C- or better
  • Earn college credit in a Pre-Calculus 1 course with a grade of C- or better
  • Earn college credit in a College Algebra course with a grade of C- or better
  • Earn a Direct Transfer Agreement (DTA) Associate Degree from a Washington State Community College
  • For college credit earned through International Baccalaureate (IB) exams in Mathematics, please see the IB Credit Table 

If none of the above applies to you, you will likely need to take the MPA.

 

The Anthropology - Biocultural Concentration and Anthropology/Biology BA do not require a math course as a major requirement. However, students completing this major are required to take chemistry courses that have math prerequisites.

If you have done or will do any of the following, then you will likely not need to take the MPA:

  • Earn college credit in a Calculus course with a grade of C- or better
  • Score a 2, 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Calculus exam
  • Score a 2, 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Pre-Calculus exam
  • Earn college credit in a Pre-Calculus 2 course with a grade of C- or better
  • Earn college credit in a Pre-Calculus 1 course with a grade of C- or better
  • Earn college credit in a College Algebra course with a grade of C- or better
  • For college credit earned through International Baccalaureate (IB) exams in Mathematics, please see the IB Credit Table 

If none of the above applies to you, you will likely need to take the MPA.

 

The Biology/Anthropology BS requires that you take Calculus I as a major requirement.

If you have done or will do any of the following, then you will likely not need to take the MPA:

  • Earn college credit in a Calculus course with a grade of C- or better
  • Score a 2, 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Calculus exam
  • Score a 2, 3, 4, or 5 on the AP Pre-Calculus exam
  • Earn college credit in a Pre-Calculus 1 course which transfers directly as MATH 114 or as MATH 1TT or Pre-Calculus 2 course which transfers directly as MATH 115 according to the Transfer Course Equivalency Guide with a grade of C- or better
  • Earn college credit in a Pre-Calculus 2 course which transfers as a Western equivalent of MATH 1TT with a grade of C+ or better
  • Earn college credit in a College Algebra course with a grade of C- or better
  • For college credit earned through International Baccalaureate (IB) exams in Mathematics, please see the IB Credit Table 

If none of the above applies to you, you will likely need to take the MPA.
